The U.S. House of Representatives has passed two spending bills, amounting to $1.4 trillion, that would fund the federal government through Sept. 30, 2020. Lawmakers approved the spending package in two votes, with the first being 297-120 and the second dropping slightly to 280-138.
The first bill was a domestic funding bill while the second bill covered homeland security and military funding.
As part of the spending package, the Pentagon will receive a record amount of funding, and there will be a repeal on taxes for high-cost health plans passed during the Obama administration. In addition, a provision will increase the legal age for buying tobacco products from 18 to 21.
Several hot button issues received funding as part of the bills. President Donald Trump received $1.375 billion for increased fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border. There was also $425 million earmarked for election security grants for the 2020 election.
Now that the House has approved the bills, they will pass to the U.S. Senate.
The White House has indicated that Trump intends to sign the bill once it reaches his desk.
