Party leaders are gearing up for the Republican National Convention this week, as the GOP aims to keep President Donald Trump in the White House for another term. On Sunday, Aug. 23, the Trump campaign released the list of speakers for convention.
Over the course of four days, more than 70 individuals – ranging from Republican Party officials to prominent conservative figures to Trump family members – will speak at the convention, which is being held in Charlotte. Many speakers are expected to speak virtually. In total, 71 individuals were listed on the speaker schedule.
The primary purpose of the convention is to formally nominate Trump as the Republican candidate for the November 2020 election. The Democratic Party has already held its convention, nominating former Vice President Joe Biden as the presidential contender and Kamala Harris as the Democratic vice president nominee.
On Monday, Sen. Tim Scott, former U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley, Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and Rep. Steve Scalise will be three of the headline speakers. In addition, Donald Trump Jr. will be speaking, as well as his girlfriend and Trump fundraiser Kimberly Guilfoyle.
First Lady Melania Trump will speak on Tuesday, in addition to the president’s children, Eric and Tiffany Trump. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Sen. Rand Paul will also speak during the Tuesday event.
Both Vice President Mike Pence and Second Lady Karen Pence are scheduled to speak on Wednesday. Sen. Marsha Blackburn and Sen. Joni Ernest will speak, and White House advisor Kellyanne Conway, who recently announced her intention to step down, will also speak.
President Donald Trump will be the major draw on Thursday, along with Sen. Mitch McConnell, Rep. Kevin McCarthy and Sen. Tom Cotton. HUD Secretary Ben Carson is also scheduled to speak, as is Ivanka Trump.
