The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund (ASPSF), is now accepting scholarship applications for the Spring 2023 semester. The application can be found online and the deadline to apply is Oct. 15.
ASPSF is responsible for awarding scholarships up to $1,200 to eligible single parents who are living in Arkansas and attending college or technical training. Assisting in both part-time and full-time single parent students, the scholarship fund helps those pursuing postsecondary education. Postsecondary education includes associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees and certificate programs.
In 2021, ASPSF awarded more than 1,400 scholarships to single parent students, totaling its contribution to $1.4 million across the state.
“This program has helped so much with paying for school and still being able to maintain my household,” said Dennis Adams, University of Arkansas-Pulaski Technical College radiology major.
ASPSF scholarships are flexible, allowing for single parents to use discretionary money to pay for simple things that create barriers between them getting their education. These things include child care, gas, car repairs, laptops, utilities and more.
The ASPSF scholarship prides itself on being more than just a check, with the fund providing personal support to recipients, including workshops, mentoring, helping students become job-ready and more. According to ASPSF, its staff works with recipients in supporting them with school through graduation, aiding them in getting into sustainable employment with family-supporting wages.
Requirements for the ASPSF include having a GED or high school diploma, a 2.0 GPA and a household income that is typically not more than 250% of Federal Poverty Guidelines, in addition to being a single parent. More information about eligibility guidelines can be found online.
