Coach Sidney Moncrief is well-respected in Arkansas sports history as one of the greatest basketball players to come out of the University of Arkansas. While he played for the hogs from 1975 to 1979, Moncrief was notated as being the Southwest Conference (SWC) Most Valuable Player. After his college career, Moncrief most-notably played for the Milwaukee Bucks.
As a Little Rock local, Moncrief has a reputation for giving back to his community, and this past week has been no different for the former NBA star. Moncrief runs a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Game Changer, that focuses on experiences, exposure, workplace readiness development, DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion), entrepreneurship and networking.
On Friday, Sept. 23, Moncrief held his 30 for 30: Shadow a CEO group workshop, as an end to his Kindness in Action week – which brings attention to acts of kindness, the importance of awareness and focuses on the positive things that happen every day, and all of which, according to Moncrief, is in conjunction with student leadership teams.
Moncrief, in his main mission, is focused on creating a better environment for young people to thrive and grow.
“My biggest piece of advice to leaders or business owners is to do as much as you can do in order to be proactive with young people, whatever you can do to help young people grow – do it,” Moncrief said, noting his gratitude for the 30 CEOs that took time out of their schedules to meet last Friday morning so that the younger generation could shadow them.
According to Moncrief, the nonprofit is on track to continue to grow with clients all the way from public school programs to being seen in the corporate realm. Moncrief is currently working on hosting workshops with companies, in addition to all he does for the younger generation.
Moncrief is also passionate about the success of creating a better social world for all environments and aspects of life, including the workplace. As the author of 11 books, Moncrief’s latest, The G.R.I.T Factor in Kindness: Transforming your Workplace Through Acts of Kindness, focuses on just that.
“We felt so passionate about The G.R.I.T. Factor and encouraging kindness that we put into writing, and I’m really excited to bring this to students and adults alike,” Moncrief said.
Collaboration, communication, care and confidence are the “Four C’s” that Moncrief focuses on in his daily life, and these are also the main points he stresses in Kindness in Action Week.
“Over my 65 years, I can point out how all four of these concepts have been a big key to my own success and growth,” Moncrief said. “This is how we stress it to students no matter what age group, including when we teach college students the value of real relationship building.”
