Sarah Huckabee Sanders has been selected to serve on the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. President Donald Trump announced last week (Oct. 16) that he intends to appoint Sanders to serve on the board.
Sanders will join the 12-member board, which is responsible for the “policies and procedures that govern the Fulbright program,” according to the Fulbright website. The board selects individuals – teachers, students, scholars, artists and more – from around the United States and abroad to participate in Fulbright programs.
She is set to serve the remainder of a three-year term. Her term will expire Sept. 22, 2022.
Sanders resigned from her position as White House press secretary – a position she served in since July 2017 – this summer. Her final day in the role was June 28, 2019. Since that time, Sanders has returned to Arkansas, stoking discussion that she is planning a run for the Governor’s Office in Arkansas. She is currently serving as a commentator for Fox News.
The Fulbright program serves as a cultural exchange program that aims to promote international cooperation. Established in 1961, the Fulbright program is designed to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchange…,” according to the Fulbright-Hays Act.
Trump also announced plans to appoint Shahira E. Knight to serve as a member of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. She would serve the remainder of a three-year term that expires Sept. 22, 2020.
