The University of Arkansas has promoted Mark Rushing as the associate vice chancellor for university relations effective April 1.
Rushing joined the university relations team in 2012 as the director of strategic communications. He has been serving as assistant vice chancellor in the university relations office since 2016.
During his eight years at the University of Arkansas, Rushing has contributed to developing unifying messaging themes for communications about the university, updating the university’s mission and vision and creating core values.
“The University of Arkansas is an amazing place and I’m extremely lucky to have the opportunity to go to work everyday with the goal of sharing a little bit about what makes this place so special by reinforcing who we are, what we do and why it matters,” Rushing said in a statement. “Supporting the university’s mission is a true team effort and I’m thankful that we have such a great team in university relations, in advancement and across campus working together to make a great university even better.”
In his new position, Rushing will oversee the department that is responsible for all university communications and media relations, marketing and branding, supervision of website design and development, audio and video support for campus events, crisis communications and the coordination of responses to Freedom of Information Act requests.
He also currently serves as co-chair of the Sesquicentennial Planning Team, helping the university prepare for its 150th anniversary celebration in 2021. Furthermore, Rushing is a member of the inaugural cohort of UARK Leaders, a leadership development program with a mission to prepare leaders while enhancing campus collaboration and innovation.
A Fayetteville native, Rushing is also a graduate of the University of Arkansas with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He earned his master’s degree in journalism from the University of Memphis. When he joined the university in 2012, he brought more than 20 years worth of experience as a journalist and public relations executive who received several broadcasting awards.
