Jimmy Carter, the longest-living U.S. president in history, turned 98 on Saturday.
In 2015, Carter survived a cancer diagnosis. He also made a swift recovery from a serious fall at his home in 2019.
According to the Associated Press, Carter celebrated his birthday this year with family and friends in Plains, Georgia – the town where he and his wife, Rosalynn, were born in the years between World War I and the Great Depression.
The Carter Center, established after the 39th president’s term in the White House, just met its 40-year mark of promoting democracy and conflict resolution, monitoring elections and advancing public health in the developing world.
In the days leading up to his birthday, Carter was reportedly seen enjoying the congratulatory messages that were sent by his supporters on social media as well as the Carter Center’s website.
According to Jimmy Carter’s grandson, Jason, the former president mostly looks forward to simple days where he can watch his favorite Major League Baseball team, the Atlanta Braves, on television.
