March marks Women’s History Month and March 8 is International Women’s Day, and as strong women are being celebrated across the world, AY About You’s very own President and Publisher Heather Baker, was featured on PowerWomen podcast.
PowerWomen is hosted by Claire Brown, a realtor and author among many other things, who started the popular Facebook Group – Little Rock PowerWomen. Brown said that being able to host Baker was incredibly special, as she is so influential.
The episode starts with Baker speaking about her background in publishing, sales and her upbringing, with the second half of the episode focusing on the lessons she has learned and is now sharing with others to learn from, too.
“I wanted to thank the mentors in my life: Nancy Batson, Alan Leveritt and the CEO of AY Media Group and power woman, Vicki Vowell,” Baker said. “Also, thanks Claire Brown for being a great friend, peer and power woman. Sharing your story doesn’t make you a victim, it makes you a survivor. There’s always someone who needs your light, warmth and raging courage.”
Brown said she was incredibly grateful that Baker took time to share her stories and lessons learned along the way.
“There are a lot of things that people don’t know about her that I think they would be interested in knowing. Again, it’s a blessing that she was vulnerable enough to share her journey,” Brown said.
The podcast focuses on powerful women, with Brown interviewing local and national leaders, mostly women, but occasionally power men – who are doing the work to help solve women-related issues.
The name that has become part of Brown’s brand came from a memorable conversation she had with a coach.
“I remember speaking about my experience and saying that I was just a single mom, he stopped me right there and said, ‘You are not just anything. You are a power mom,’ and consequently, I removed the word ‘just’ from my vocabulary,” Brown said.
Brown said she journaled around this concept and thought about it a lot. PowerWomen came from that first instance of being called a power mom. In an effort for more inclusivity and acceptance, Brown knew she wanted to create a space that was accepting of all women in whatever paths they are journeying in, and so PowerWomen was born.
According to the PowerWomen website, the Facebook Group grew quickly, multiplying by 100 in just under a month. The group now has 18,700 women.
“I think that the biggest benefit of this group is that it has created a sense of community for so many women. It shows women that we are not alone in anything and it has truly become a place where women can come together to discuss anything. From the woman trying to leave a domestic violence situation all the way to the women looking for a new job, entering menopause or trying to find the place with the best shapewear in town. This group has become a community,” Brown said.
“I think the women in the group have shown that they’re more powerful than they think, all women are so powerful, and it’s important to own it and stand in that,” Brown said.
