Power Women: Maggie Hogan
CFO of Kelley Commercial Partners
What’s your secret to success?
Perseverance is high on the list, along with always being willing to ask questions. People make mistakes because they are not willing to stop and ask questions. Asking questions is a sign of intelligence, not weakness.
How did you get started in your field?
It was a chance meeting — I was looking for a new career path and ran into someone that worked for the company. She remembered my background in construction and as a former CFO. The company was looking for a property manager with an accounting background, and I fit the bill.
What advice would you give to a young woman starting her career?
Have a strong work ethic and dogged determination. Both will serve you well.
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
It is much easier now than it was in my 30s with young children. It took me a while to understand how important self care is. I work hard, but I also take time for myself. I love to travel and try to make sure that there is a boondoggle planned around the corner.
What obstacles have you had to overcome?
I started in the highway construction business working in a man’s world, so early on, I had to learn to set boundaries while not taking myself too seriously. It is a good lesson in general. I am pretty laid-back as a leader — determined, but laid-back.
