Gov. Asa Hutchinson has issued a new directive on Aug. 14 with guidelines for school-sponsored team sports events at indoor and outdoor venues.
“The facilities will be expected to not go over 66 percent of capacity, they will be expected to socially distance, that means six feet between individuals or family groups, and then also to wear masks,” he said. “Those are a couple of the fundamental principles and that way we don’t have to review every facility requirement. It’s a broad-based venue specification as to what is expected.”
There will also be more guidance for music and band participants at those events.
“My admonition is let’s not only start the season this year, but let’s work to finish the season,” Hutchinson said. “That’s what’s important and that’s going to take everyone’s help from the coaches to the staff to the band leaders to the choir directors under challenging circumstances to make sure our students have this opportunity for those activities.”
Monitoring and compliance at the events will be left up to each individual school district.
The governor said the new guidelines with all the details will be posted on the Arkansas Department of Health website later.
