Due to intensely hot and dry conditions across the state, all but 20 of 75 counties in Arkansas are currently under burn bans as of Aug.1. In light of the continually changing burn-ban rates, Keep Arkansas Beautiful has issued a warning against cigarette litter, which the commission says can ignite fires in such conditions.
“Many don’t realize that littered cigarette butts can be fanned into flames by passing cars or wind, igniting a spark that can cause a fire,” said executive director Colbie Jones. “We are urging Arkansans to think twice before tossing their cigarette butts and choose to dispose of litter properly, especially in these conditions.”
Cigarette butts are the most common form of litter in Arkansas, and while they’re especially dangerous now, disposing of them improperly is illegal in all weather conditions and can result in fines up to $1000. Disposing of cigarette butts properly helps to prevent fires, keeps our rivers, lakes, and streams healthy, and keeps Arkansas beautiful. To learn more, visit KeepArkansasBeautiful.com.
