Everything’s coming up Razorbacks, at least according to the latest CBS Sports’ Best in College Sports rankings for the 2021-22 season. University of Arkansas athletics came in No. 5 nationally with 459.50 points, also making it the highest-ranked program in the SEC. The next highest SEC programs were Alabama as No.8 (396.25 points) and Georgia as No.9 (395.50 points).
The high ranking was well deserved, with the football team going 9-4 and ending the season in the top 25, not to mention taking home the Golden Boot and Battle Line trophies against LSU and Missouri, respectively. After capping off the season with a 24-10 win over Penn State in the Outback Bowl, the Hogs earned a spot at No. 20 in the USA Today / AFCA Coaches poll.
The men’s and women’s basketball teams both had impressive runs, with the men making their second straight Elite Eight appearance and the women making their second consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament. In the College World Series, the Diamond Hogs fell just one game short of a championship series appearance. The women’s soccer team claimed a third straight SEC title and made their first ever appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament.
The CBS Sports rankings look at football, men’s and women’s basketball, and two “wild cards” from the school’s most successful spectator sports. Football and men’s basketball factor more heavily into the weighted formula, with bowl games and championship runs also considered.
Alabama and Georgia’s rankings were both dragged down by their basketball scores, with Alabama’s women’s team and Georgia’s men’s team each earning 0 points.
