Central Arkansas Water was named top five best tasting water in North America during the American Water Works Association Best of the Best taste test competition at the organization’s 2021 Annual Conference and Exposition, the agency announced Thursday.
Each year, AWWA section taste-test winners from the previous year compete to win the Best of the Best. Central Arkansas Water was part of the competition due to its selection as Southwest Section AWWA Regional Champion during the last section conference in 2019. The North American competition was postponed for one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Candidates submit samples in one-liter containers, judged by flavor-profile analyzers and local figures on a 10-point scale from good (1) to best (10). Eleven different utilities from across the country were recognized as section winners and competed for the title. The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority of Boston was named the overall winner.
CAW has been recognized both nationally and statewide as the best drinking water in Arkansas. Forbes magazine recognized CAW as having the second-best water quality in the nation, and CAW was named best drinking water in Arkansas numerous times, including back-to-back years in 2018 and 2019.
“CAW is proud to be recognized again nationally for what our customers already know,” Tad Bohannon, CAW CEO, said. “We have some of the best tasting, most affordable water in the country. We consistently demonstrate our commitment to great water, and other utilities look to us as a model for best watershed protection and water treatment practices.”
CAW water is sourced from two highly protected water sources — Lake Maumelle and Lake Winona — and serves one out of every six Arkansans across seven counties.
