Arkansas State University alumni have established a scholarship in honor of Gen. George Barker.
Buddy and Charlotte Beck of Fairfax Station, Va. have established the Gen. George Barker Scholarship Endowment. The couple established the scholarship to honor Barker for his board service to the Beck Center for Veterans, which they began with a gift of $1 million in 2007.
“We are very thankful for the service to the Beck Center board by General Barker, and so very appreciative of the thoughtful gift from Buddy and Charlotte to honor his work on the board,” Chancellor Kelly Damphousse said in a statement.
A 1955 graduate of Arkansas State University, Barker joined the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant after received an ROTC officer commission. He held two field artillery battalion commands and was the commander of a civil affairs command as a brigadier general. He was also the commander of an Army reserve command as a major general.
He was named assistant deputy chief of staff for the mobilization and reserve affairs department for the U.S. Army during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He retired from the military in August 1991.
Barker has served as a trustee for the Army War College Foundation and is a member of the Chancellor’s Circle at Arkansas State University and the Veterans National Advisory Council.
